Transfiguration Catholic School

Activities & Enrichments

Fine Arts

Transfiguration offers both elective and extracurricular fine arts programming. See our offerings below.

  • Band is offered for students in grades 4-8. Currently, our band program is growing. We have Cub, Tiger, Black and Gold bands. We also offer a co-curricular Jazz Band. Students each get a 30-minute lesson time in a small group session or with our brass specialist. Students will also have at least one 30-minute rehearsal each week. Students perform several times during the year, including our Christmas, and Spring concerts. In addition, students are encouraged to provide music ministry at Mass. Advanced students partake in solo/ensemble contests and honor band.

  • Drama Club is an after-school activity for all students in grades 5-8. Students meet 2 times a week to learn basics of theater and prepare a play. Students take leadership roles in acting, tech, and costume creation. Students collaborate to take a show from scratch to performance.

  • Youth Choir is a co-curricular activity. Students in grades 4-8 meet once a week throughout the school year. Multiple performance opportunities are given, including Christmas, Fat Tuesday, Spring concerts, school Masses and parish Masses. Students will perform National Anthem annually at a nearby high school. Students learn how to work together and learn different styles of music and vocal techniques.

Academic Enrichment

  • Teams of five students practice every other week before school and compete against other schools in four “Meets” per season. Open to students in grades 5 through 8, students compete in three different categories: Mind Sprints, P.A.R.T.Y. in a Box, and Face-Off!

  • Chess club is open to grades K-8. Students meet once a week before school to learn and improve their chess skills by playing games with one another and solving chess puzzles. Through the game of chess, students develop patience and thoughtfulness, learn how to think abstractly, weigh options, and improve concentration skills. Research shows that chess can improve students' math and reading test scores.

  • 6-8th grade students compete in Transfiguration Catholic School's annual Religion Bee held in January. The winner advances on to the Regional Religion Bee in February.

  • Quiz Bowl team practices once a week during school and competes in the 8th Grade Quiz Bowl at the University of St. Thomas. The team also competes against the Faculty in the annual Faculty/Student Quiz Bowl during Catholic Schools Week.

  • 4-8th grade students compete in Transfiguration Catholic School's annual Spelling Bee. The winner can move on to another competition if available.

  • Every other year, 7th and 8th grade students have an opportunity to visit Washington D.C. to see and learn about our country’s history and how our nation's foundation was built on a strong faith in God. Some of the sites they will visit include famous monuments and memorials, National Archives, White House, United States Capital, Library of Congress, Smithsonian Museums, Arlington National Cemetery, Mount Vernon, Ford's Theater, and the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. This four day tour is coordinated through American Christian Tours.

Leadership & Service

Students actively participate in our leadership programming both in the classroom and after school.

  • Junior Achievement is an enrichment opportunity provided during class time for grades K-8 that provides hands-on activities to teach age-appropriate financial literacy skills. Grades 6-8 combine classroom learning with simulated real-world experience at Junior Achievement's experiential learning lab in Maplewood.

  • Student Council is made up of elected members from each grade, 4th-8th Grade. Meetings are held twice a month before school, and elected officers and representatives must be able to attend meetings. Officers and members also serve on various community committees, school committees and task forces. Student Council-sponsored activities include student donations to charitable organizations, student social activities, and the annual Talent Show.

  • Eighth grade students have the opportunity to help with the layout of the school yearbook under the guidance of a teacher advisory staff. Students work together to create collage photo pages, class pages, and an "Eighth Grade through the Years" page. Students are also involved in editing. Those wanting to participate in development of the yearbook will need to attend meetings either before or after school.
